“Did you hear that,” Mya whispered to the devil, who was sitting in the chair watching TV.
“Hear what, babe,” he asked munching popcorn, eyes glued to the screen.
“That noise,” she whispered again.
“Nope didn’t hear it. Anyway it’s 2 am in the morning no one is up but us.” The devil waved his hand dismissing her fears. “You’re just paranoid because it’s Sean’s computer you’re using.”
“Well if he’d hook the scanner up to MY computer I wouldn’t have to touch his.”
“Mya, how often do you use the scanner,” the angel asked stealing a handful of the devil’s popcorn.
“Get your own,” the devil snorted moving the bowl away from her.
“Well, maybe twice a year but that’s not the point,” Mya sniffed pressing a button. WHOOPS, now how did that happen.
“Sean uses it all the time so doesn’t it make….,” the angel began.
“That’s right take his side like just like always.” Mya shook her head, pressing more buttons. YIKES, now it looked worse.
“Or you could just wait until tomorrow night when he gets home,” the devil suggested. Mya was about to retort when the noise came again.
“There did you hear it that time?” She stood up, creeping to the office door.
“Yeah,” said the devil.
“Yeah,” said the angel.
“It sounds like some one is moving the garbage cans on the back porch.” Mya reached beside her to grab Sean’s baseball bat.
“Of course you locked the back door,” the angel commented. Mya just gave her a ‘look’.
“As I haven’t gone to bed yet NO I didn’t lock the back door.”
“And just how many times have we heard THAT lecture,” the devil rolled his eyes.
“Apparently not enough.” The angel said sneaking another handful of popcorn. “Of course if you also hadn’t taken Sean’s phone out of the office and left it who knows where you could call the police,” she added. Mya gave her another ‘look’.
“Isn’t there some OTHER person you should be annoying at this moment.” Mya flicked her in the forehead.
“OWWW,” sniffed the angel.
The noise came again; Mya’s eyes went wide with a tiny bit of fright. Peeking out of the office she looked down the long dark hallway into the dark kitchen. She turned out the light in the office before stepping out into the hall. Taking tiny, silent steps she made it to the kitchen, the bat resting on her shoulder. The motion detector light had burned out on the garage and she regretted not replacing it (like she told Sean she had a week ago. She was going to first thing in the next morning). As shadow moved by the window, Mya ducked down, her breath coming in short gasps.
The devil tucked himself behind her ear. “Who do you think it is,” he whispered. “This is just like one of those horror movies you always watch. Where the heroine hears some thing then gets whacked trying to find out what it is.”
“Thank you SO much for mentioning that,” Mya hissed.
“No prob, babe. You know me always trying to help.” The devil patted her shoulder consolingly. “Stay close to the ground though; those doomed dames always get up to run, that’s when they get it.” Mya crab walked to the island in the kitchen floor. Reaching up to the counter she felt for the phone. CRAP, she’d carried that one somewhere too. Peering around the corner to the window she didn’t see anything, if she could make it to the door then she could lock it; give her time to find a phone. Taking a deep breath to fortify herself she crawled across the kitchen floor to the table. Tucking herself under it she listened again and heard the sound of a vehicle door shutting. DOUBLE CRAP! Her purse & keys (including the one to the house) were in the car. THEN she saw her jacket lying on the bench; YES YES YES! Her cell phone was in the jacket pocket! Sliding under the table she quickly reached in to the pocket, flipped it open and NOTHING! It was DEAD. DRATS and DOUBLE DRATS. Plug your phone in as soon as you get home so it's charged when you need it; the lecuture ran through her head; was HE always right?
“By the time you get the door locked we are all going to murdered in our beds.” The devil clung to her tightly. Before she could lose her courage Mya scurried to the door; leaning her back to the wall beside it, still crouched down clutching the bat. Just as she was about to reach up to the lock it, the knob started to turn and the door swung slowly open. The devil ran screaming in fear from the room while Mya sat paralyzed with fear unable to even breathe. There was a rustling sound then some one began to move through the door, Mya SCREAMED loud enough to wake the dead (although she was certain they were already awake and coming to call), closing her eyes she swung the bat with all her might…………………………………………….she heard a dull thud then nothing. The kitchen light snapped on, Mya opened one eye (less scary with only one eye open), to see suitcase beside of pair of legs standing next to her. Strangely the legs looked familiar and HEY so did the suit case. She opened her other eye, looking a little higher, oh yes that belt looked familiar along with the hands on those hips. Yup, she had up close and personal knowledge of those hands. She tilted her head looking ALL the way up, giving a little laugh before smiling sweetly.
“Hi Sean.”
Sean just stood there looking down at her, one eye brow raised……………………………………….
I really, really, really, REALLY HATE that eyebrow thing!
