“She was afraid to come out of the water,
She was as nervous as she could be.
She was afraid to come out of the water,
She was afraid that somebody would see.
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore.
It was an itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
That she wore for the first time today,
An itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini,
So in the water she wanted to stay."
It was THAT song which came to mind while Sarah was shopping with her friend Becky for a swim suit to take on an after Christmas trip to the beach.
Sarah grew up hearing the story of her mother teasing her father by wearing a bikini he deemed improper. She laughed remembering the pictures in the family album of that infamous suit. By today’s standards there was nothing risqué about those small yellow dots scattered on boy shorts and a modest halter of soooo long ago. Why was it ever such a big deal?
The family would be extending Christmas a bit. There had been such a rush with school and work that they really had little down time. Although Sarah would have preferred to stay at home, this would afford an opportunity to work on her tan before going starting her fourth semester and to get a head start with some serious reading.
She had missed her brother, Justin, now a senior. He was bringing a friend from the college he attended on the other coast. This trip would give them some fun time together. Sarah’s friend, Rebecca, would tag along too.
(You can all guess what happened. If I were a real writer I could tell of the lousy weather that greeted them each morning, and the bantering that took place while trying to entertain themselves for days with scrabble, movies, televised football games, shopping and video games. Amongst the frivolity there were the seemingly mature discussions, only 21 - 23 year-olds can have, with hints of expectations, hopes and dreams. Essentially Becky and Justin became a couple as did Sara and Mike.)
Then, on the last day, THERE WAS SUN!
Sarah was up first and quickly in the water. Shopping that day before Christmas, she had found the perfect suit to allow for as much of a tan as possible. Her top was a couple of purple pasties and the bottom a thong, bright purple with yellow dots in front and flesh fabric on the back. NOW she realized THIS suit might not be appropriate. By the time the others had gotten wet, her top had disappeared.
“She was afraid to come out of the water,
She was as nervous as she could be.
She was afraid to come out of the water,
She was afraid that somebody would see."
Mike and Justin were soon, too, in the water. Brothers being brothers, Justin enjoyed her embarrassment then headed for a camera. And Mike, well Mike was not prepared for the exhibition rising out of the water in front of him. She was lovely; but this indecent irresponsible behavior was not something he would tolerate. Now, as her protector, emphasizing a message of safety, he held her with an arm wrapped around the back of her waist and tanned that perfect rear in a way the sun could not.
Justin snapped the perfect shot as Sarah was planted in the thigh deep water looking towards Becky as she approached with a large towel.
Later using a couple of computer clicks, that sweet brother framed a pouty pic with a 2 and a 7. One copy sits framed on Mike’s desk to remind him of the nymph he has waiting. And another is in the family album.
