Elli woke up, hoping that Scott had taken the hint and left during the night. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee tickled her nose letting her know that her hopes had been dashed.
Hunger and need for caffeine won over pride. Elli wrapped her robe around her and went to the kitchen.
Scott sat with his back to her, sipping his morning coffee. “Good morning.” He broached without turning his head as he heard her step into the room.
Elli snorted a reply and headed for the cabinet, pulling out a mug and filling it with the hot liquid that started her morning. She had every intention of returning to her room when Scott touched her wrist as she went by.
“Sit with me; we need to talk.” Elli reluctantly sat down; too exhausted to fight from a fitful night’s sleep and a head that pounded from dehydration from the tears she had soaked her pillow with in the night.
“What happened to us, talk to me, please.” Scott implored. “I know I was too wrapped up in my new business, I knew I was putting in too many hours, but it was a sacrifice I had to make to build the business. It was a sacrifice you had to make too, you knew that.”
Elli glared at him from beneath her half closed eyes. “Just leave me alone. You have your business; you have your…business…” she could not bring herself to mention the word “secretary”. She shoved back the chair and sulked back into her bedroom, taking refuge between the covers.
A few hours later and she was awake and restless, she listened for any movement. Nothing; just the lapping of the water against the shore. She slipped into the shower and then quickly dressed. She had decided that she would use the boat to get into town, go to the service station and hire someone to go put gas in her car and then she would go back to her apartment in the city.
Scott’s car was not in the drive when she got up, but his clothes were still in the guest room. She sighed her relief at his absence and headed to the dock and to the boat, time was of the essence.
Clouds were beginning to gather as she boarded the boat. She was playing “beat the clock” to get to town and back before nature released her fury. Elli made it to town before the storm broke. She quickly handled her errand and boarded the boat to head back to the cabin.
“Gonna be a mean one.” A voice called out to her from the dock. “Better stay here and take cover.” The voice belonged to Ray, a salty old man who had been attached to the town as long as barnacles, and ran the local bait shop. “Haven’t seen you around in ages, thought you’d sold the place.”
Elli distractedly muttered a response. The thunder from the coming storm was ringing in her ears. She just wanted to get back to the cabin and pack up her things and leave before Scott came back.
Driving rain drenched her, blurring her vision. The sky was ominously dark and foreboding. The only light came from the flashes of lightening. Fear gripped her. She didn’t have the experience to pilot the boat in this kind of weather. She stayed close to the shore, the strong waves pulling her in even closer. She never saw the rock sticking out of the water until it was too late. She hit it head on, tearing the hull, her body flung forward, smashing her into the windshield. She lost consciousness.
Scott was in town at the hardware store, picking up supplies for some necessary repairs. He had spotted Elli’s car on the way into town, he had the gas can filled and planned to stop on his way back and fill the tank. He lifted his head and checked the sky; he loved a good thunderstorm, especially when he could watch it roll in over the lake. One last stop at the bait shop to pick up some tackle and bait and he would head home to watch the storm.
“Just saw your misses.” Roy growled out. “Shouldn’t be out in a boat in a storm like this; gonna be a bad one, my bones are telling me.” He lifted his shoulders and shuttered to emphasize.
“Elli was here, in the boat?” Scott felt alarm rising.
“Yep. Told her to stay here and ride it out. Seemed pretty distracted to me.”
“I need to borrow your boat, Roy.” Scott shouted as he raced to the dock, the sky opening up to unleash it’s furry.
Elli felt the rain pelting down on her. She also realized the boat was sinking. She tried to climb higher, but her strength was failing her. “Oh, Scott.” She cried. “Help me.” She began to pray for rescue. She needed to see Scott, even if it was one last time. She needed to tell him she loved him, that she needed him, and that she wanted him.
The hum of a motor tickled in her ear. She thought nature was playing a nasty trick on her. She even thought she heard her name being shouted. Fate could be so cruel.
Scott came upon the wreck. The boat was half sunk in the cold lake, but at least he had found Elli. He swam over and lifted her in his arms, gently caressing her arms and legs to check for broken bones. The water was no place to be during a thunderstorm, so he worked quickly rescuing her; professing his love for her and threats of what he was going to do to her once they were safe.
Scott stood by her side as the doctor stitched up the cut on her head. No concussion, just a nasty bruise. She would be fine in a few days.
After three days of coddling and being waited on hand and foot, Elli had had enough. Her temper began to rise and revived her smart mouth. Scott quickly grew tired of her animosity and began to raise his eyebrows in unspoken threats. He had reached the end of his patience. It was time for a talk and plenty of action if he didn’t get the right answers.
Elli had forgotten how desperately she had wanted to see Scott as she lay injured in the boat. Old anger and hurt took over. She pushed every button Scott had. Finally, she pushed too far. She had gotten out of bed in the middle of the night to get a drink and stubbed her toe on a chair leg. She began to swear and take everything out on that poor innocent chair, throwing it across the kitchen, nearly missing Scott as he stood watching her tirade, hands on his hips.
“Pick it up.” He growled. The look of fury knitted his eyebrows together, warning her that he would tolerate no disobedience.
Elli crossed the room, staring at her bare feet and picked up the chair, placing it in an upright position. “Sit.” Came Scott’s one word command.
Elli sat in the chair as she was told. Scott bent down and lifted her by the ankle, examining her foot, finding no real damage. Then he put his hands down on each side of the table, trapping her in the chair. “Now, we are going to talk.”
“Go to hell!” Elli snapped, only to find herself being lifted from the chair by her shoulders. Scott sat in the now vacant chair and pulled Elli across his knee. His left hand gathered the hem of her nightgown into his fist and lifted the offending garment over her bare bottom. He took a second to admire the glory of her orbs before crashing his right hand down with a splat that instantly reddened, leaving the print of all five fingers behind. Elli yelled and screamed. Scott continued to spank and spank. When Elli’s struggle seemed to leave her, he rested his hand on her bottom and began his interrogation.
“Ok, now you’re going to tell me why you packed up and walked out on me!” He accentuated his request with his hand.
Elli considered being defiant, but the fight failed her. “Your secretary.” She sputtered out. “You were having an affair with your secretary.”
“Elli, I’ve never loved anyone but you. I’ve never been unfaithful. When one of the other girls told me she wasn’t giving me your messages, I fired her, but by then, you were gone. You left me.” Scott’s voice broke at the statement.
Elli pushed herself up off Scott’s knee and settled herself onto his lap. His knees parted way to accommodate her bottom. “I’m sorry.” Elli muttered into his neck. “I’m so sorry. I was just so hurt and confused.”
Scott pulled her closer, wishing with all his might that they could blend into one body and could ease each other. “Let’s forgive, but not forget, we’ve learned too much from this to ignore that it happened.” His arms curled under her legs, his lips locking with her own to taste the salt that lingered from her tears. He carried her to bed; undressed and snuggled her close then began to explore her body again, refreshing his mind and senses to all he had missed. Elli returned his touch and his love measure for measure. They were together again.
It had been a week of discovery and pleasure; of getting reacquainted and loving. Elli sat on Scott’s lap on the Adirondack chair, watching the sunset. “I love you, ya old poop.” Elli sassed and was rewarded with the rumble of laughter that shook Scott’s chest. They cuddled together as the sun set, casting an aura of gold over them and their love.
