From the moment Josh Brady saw Bonnie Garrett, he knew he had to have her. She had walked out of a hostage situation, a very dangerous one, looking cool and calm. Then she walked right over to…a guy…who Josh later found out was one of the doctors from the clinic. Josh didn’t know at the time what this guy meant to her, but he was determined to find out. When you’re a cop it’s easy to find out just about anything. Sometimes you use your wit, other times you use the skill you’ve learned in the field. But sometimes a little brawn is all it takes. It was all it took this time…with her. He walked right over to her, whisked her away from Doctor Feelgood, and got her into an ambulance. Josh figured that if the guy cared enough he’d be over to her in a heartbeat. The man didn’t even bother. And he’s a DOCTOR!
Josh didn’t give him another thought because the first thing he needed to do right then was calm her so the EMT could have a look. He saw the look in her eyes after he got a little stern with her, and he thought his heart would melt. He walked her to her car, and after making some small talk, he asked her out on a date. And that date was tonight.
Josh found out that she was best friends with Doctor Rowan, and he actually considered NOT asking Bonnie out because of it. He’d never met a woman who had pissed him off as quickly as Doctor Sloan Rowan had, and he was profoundly grateful that she was Lieutenant Vincent Gerardi’s problem, and not his. She’d never sit again if she belonged to him. But then, Doctor Rowan surprised him. She actually came and apologized. It surprised him because she didn’t seem like the type, and Josh could see what a hard time she was having doing it. He was certain Vince had done some convincing of his own, or she surely would not have been there. It was then that Josh told Sloan that he’d asked Bonnie out. Sloan made the sign of the cross, said something in Latin, and then bid him good luck and God Speed. Then she called Bonnie.
“Are you OUT OF YOUR MIND?”
“What? What did I do?”
“You said YES! That’s what you did! Meet me for lunch. I want to know everything!”
A week later the first issue of BDSM Weekly came, addressed to Josh. A week after that he started receiving calls asking for Scarlett, Desiree and Ginger, and three days after that he was called into the Captain’s office. The Captain wanted to know if Josh was running a prostitution ring, and what the hell did he think he was doing, for Christ’s sake! After much research it was discovered that somehow his phone number ended up at the back of a weekly newspaper that catered to, shall we say, the ‘alternative sex’ crowd. You see, Scarlett, Desiree and Ginger weren’t girls at all. He couldn’t wait to see Sloan again…in a room, just the two of them. Oh, he was so looking forward to THAT day!
He thought of all this as he drove down Bonnie’s block. He was as nervous as a teenager on his first date, and Josh was forty-three years old! He stopped at a stop sign and was about to enter the block Bonnie lived on when he saw a police car ahead. As he got closer he saw that the patrolman was engaged in a heated argument with a woman. And as he drew closer still, he saw that the woman was Bonnie Garrett.
Bonnie was gesticulating wildly with her arms, and he could tell by the body language of the patrolman that she was skating on very thin ice. Police officers in the city did not take kindly to ANYONE arguing with them or gesticulating wildly. She was going down in a minute and it wouldn’t be pretty. Josh pulled in behind the patrol car.
“Hi, there. What’s going on?” and as Josh approached, the patrolman reached for his gun.
“HO! Whoa, there! I’m on the job. I’m a cop!” and he quickly pulled out his badge.
“Oh, man! I apologize, Lieutenant. I didn’t know.”
“It’s alright, officer…” Josh leaned in to look at the name badge he wore on his chest. “…Stevens. What seems to be the trouble here?” And as he said this he glared at Bonnie. She’d gotten this rookie so riled up he almost pulled a gun on Josh. This was not good! Not good at all.
“Josh, oh thank God! This…this SECURITY GUARD pulled me over for no reason at all, and now I’m LATE!” And she emphasized ‘late’ with a sour glare in poor officer Stevens’ direction.
Josh turned to Bonnie. “OK. Just get back in your car and let me handle this.”
“I want an apology! I…!”
Josh leaned in and whispered, “I advise you to get back in your car, Bonnie, or an apology will be the LAST thing you’ll be getting!”
“Humpfh!” And with a sour glare toward Josh she got back in her car. He glared right back at her, hands firmly planted on hips, and looked to the sky for guidance. He really didn’t want to upend this woman before they’d even had dinner, but if she kept up the attitude, she’d be eating in the standing position. He would see to that.
“Stevens,” he said to the patrolman, leading him toward the back of Bonnie’s car, “Tell me what happened here.”
Bonnie sat in her car and bit her lip. Shit! How embarrassing! She didn’t want Josh to see her like this, but she knew, JUST KNEW, that he would, given the timing. This…this…OGRE couldn’t find another block to pick on?
“WHAAAAT!” That was Josh. Oh, my! She looked in her side mirror and saw Josh and the patrolman come up to her window. Josh’s face was like a thundercloud.
“Out of the car, Bonnie. Right now.”
She looked up at him. “I’m fine right here.”
“OUT! NOW!” God, he DID bellow! Sheesh!
“ALRIGHT, Joshua! You don’t have to yell!”
Josh took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “You’re right. I’m sorry.” He knew yelling didn’t work with women, and he vowed to stop it. With her. If she lived long enough!
Bonnie got out of the car, and officer Stevens came forward.
“Ma’am, I’m giving you a ticket for going sixty in a thirty mile per hour zone. This is a residential street, ma’am. People cross the street, kids cross the street. And not only were you speeding but you missed the stop sign entirely back there.”
My God, this cop looked like he was sixteen! She looked over at Josh who stood there with his beefy arms folded over his chest, and she noticed for the first time how good he looked. He wore light colored chinos and a black light-weight sweater. The sleeves of the sweater were pulled up exposing big, muscular forearms. His hair was dark blond, with just the hint of gray beginning at the temples. Deep laugh lines surrounded blue eyes that sparkled under the street light, and she thought at that moment she’d never seen anything more stunning in her life.
“Tell her the rest, Stevens,” Josh said, obviously very pleased with himself at this point. WELL! Any idea she’d entertained of having sex with him tonight was over, brother! O-v-e-r!
“Well, ma’am, since we consider this reckless driving you will not be able to attend traffic school. This will be two points on your record.”
“Shit! You have GOT to be kidding!”
“Bonnie!” Josh crooked a finger at her and jerked it violently, telling her without words to get her rear end to him pronto.
She scooted over to him, then whispered angrily, “How could you let him do this to me! You’re a cop! Dooooo something!”
“Oh, young lady, I AM going to do something. But first, YOU are going to do something.”
“WHAT!” she screamed when he told her. “I most certainly will NOT…!” He had already spun her around in the direction of the patrolman, and gave her a shove. She spun back around. “No, Josh!” Then she dropped her voice to a whisper. “Not now. I will, but NOT NOW! I’ve had enough humiliation for one evening.” And he saw the tears well in her eyes.
“It is humiliation you brought on yourself, so apologize to the man for calling him a security guard, Bonnie. I mean it!” He wagged a finger at her while he spoke.
“Tsk! Ugh!” She walked over to the patrolman. Josh could hear her apology and it was about as sincere as she could muster right now. Sloan Rowan’s apology to him was more sincere, and he figured Vince had a ‘hand’ in that. Bonnie took the ticket and her license from the patrolman and she started to get in to her car.
Josh said goodbye to the officer, but stopped Bonnie from getting in.
“Uh uh. You’re walking. Where’s your house?” He looked down at her feet and saw that she was wearing very high heels. He figured walking would not be very pleasant.
“Half a block away, and I am NOT walking!”
“Oh, yes you are!” He took Bonnie’s keys out of the ignition and locked her car. “You are going to learn all about walking, my girl, if you keep this up! Now get going!”
And Josh got into his car and followed slooowly along. He rolled down the window and waved to her, asked her where the nearest gas station was, asked her if she wanted a ride…all while she walked down the street to her house. At first she tried to ignore him, but soon she was smiling. She turned away from him so he couldn’t see her smiling, but he knew that she was.
She finally came to a house and crossed the lawn. He pulled up into the driveway. She let herself in, and waited for Josh to get out and come to the door. And as he climbed the two steps, she stepped back…and closed the door in his face.
He laughed and looked to the sky again for guidance. It hadn’t come yet, but maybe one day it would.
She was a handful! What the hell was he going to do with her?
