Kenneth Matterson was about to go bankrupted within five years he was told. Ken was shocked as his financial adviser, and close friend, showed him over a half a million dollars in credit cards and large clothing and furniture overdue bills he had no idea he had. How can that be?
How can he be so blind as to let his wife and daughter destroyed everything he had dreamed about.
As a son of a coal miner Kenneth saw first hand what it is to work hard and still scratch for money . At the age of 15 he had started working the mine on weekends and after school to help his parents make ends meet but, he had managed to safe enough money for his years of college. His dream was to build a small empire and he set up to do just that.
He is the owner of over 30 outlet malls, all over the United States and Canada. It didn't come easy for Kenneth, he had to work hard to get to this point.
He drove around thinking of what happened at his friend's office, something had to be done. I have to put my foot down, he thought to himself, this has gone way to far. He loves his wife and daughter dearly but what he is about to do will hurt him more than them or will it?
Kenneth had met his wife some 25 years ago at a friend's New Year's Eve party. There she was, sitting all by herself, pouting because her escort was ignoring her.
Eleanor Radburn is the daughter of a Oil Baron. Very rich and born with a silver spoon in her mouth, come to think of it may have been gold.
Very beautiful woman and very smart but because she was so spoiled her selfishness overpowered it and that is why she was sitting all by herself that faithful night at the New Year's Eve Party.
Kenneth saw pass the selfishness and saw the beautiful woman that she could be and is, most of the time. He fell in love with her right there at the party and they were married a year after.
Kimberly Ruth was born 5 long years after their marriage and she captured her father's heart the minute he saw her. She has her mother's deep blue eyes and her father's dimples.
Kenneth spoiled the two women in his life without thinking it might be harmful in the long run. Today with a heavy heart he will have to remedy that.
While driving home Ken spotted a new Diner, one of the old fashion ones they use to have in the 50's. I need to think he thought of himself, a good cup of coffee and a piece of apple pie will help. So he stopped there to eat.
As he got in the restaurant he spotted the cook, recognized him as Clayton Yate, the son of a good friend of his.
"HEYYYY!! Clay. How are you ,son? Haven't seen you in ages." Ken walked to Clay and shook his hand.
Clay turned around from what he was doing. "Mr Matterson! How are you?" Clay shook Ken's hand clapping him on the back.
"Could be better" Ken said sitting down on a stool at the soda bar. "Sit down Son, and tell me what have you been doing."
Clay saw that Ken was the only client for now and chose to sit down beside Ken after he had served Ken, and himself, a cup of coffee.
Clay told Ken how he had just got out of College with a major in Culinary art, so a few months ago while looking for a place to open his restaurant he happen to fall on this little Gold mine. Clay brought his parents to see the place and they fell in love with it and suggested Clay to opened a little 50's 60's styled diner.
Ken found Clay very interesting. He loves a man that works hard to achieves his dreams and by the look of this little Diner Clay sure work hard, it seems that he is alone to do all the cooking.
A couple of costumer came in so Clay went back in the kitchen and Ken moved to a semi secluded booth near the kitchen to sort through all the receipts his financial adviser gave him so he could decide what to do when he got home.
When they were once again alone Clay joined Ken in the booth with a another cup of coffee and a big piece of hot apple pie for both of them.
Ken put the receipts away and sighed." Problems?" Clay asked taking a sip of his coffee.
"Not if I do something about it" Ken states taking a bite of his pie.. "MMMM!!! this is good".
"Thanks Mr Matterson" Clay smiled and watched Ken devouring his piece of pie.
"Clay tell me something" Ken asked." Do you have any help around here ?"
"Well" Clay said. "Yes I have a waitress but she is sick today so that is why I am everywhere". Clay laughed
"Do you need another one?" Ken asked, wiping his mouth with his napkin.
"Yes. I do as a matter of fact. Do you know of someone?"
"Yes I do, my own daughter" Ken said and proceed to tell Clay everything about his little darling.
"I'll make you a deal, I will send you my daughter and in return I will advertise your little restaurant in my malls."
"Okayyyy!" Clay said amazed at his good fortune. " Don't be so happy Clay my daughter is a handful."
"I can handle her Mr Matterson but I must tell you I am a very old fashion guy. Kind of like this place. You might not like the way I will deal with Kimberly".
"Don't worry, Clay" (Ken remembered how Clay's dad handle his wife in difficult times) " My daughter will be fine." With that said they both got up.
"OHH btw, Sir" I have a uniform I'd like your daughter to wear.
"Super" Ken said as he took the uniform, a blue and white 60s kind of uniform made of polyester, the fabric of choice in those days.
"I need her from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday but I'll need her to be here at 7 tomorrow so I have time to show her what I want done before I open, tell her not to be late." Clay said, shaking Ken's free hand.
"OHH I'll make sure" Ken said clapping Clay's back " I will drive her myself."
Ken turned and got out of the Diner, whistling a happy tune.
When Kenneth got home he saw his beloved daughter sitting on the couch with her feet on a very expensive coffee table, eating chips and watching the TV.
"Where is your mother?" he asked Kim
"Don't know" Kim said with a mouth full of chips.
"I'll go find your mother. I need to see you both in my office pronto!" With that said he left the living room in search of his wife.
He found her in their bedroom with pen and pad in one hand and a measuring tape in the other.
"Oh! Hi Honey" she said when she heard Ken coming in the bedroom.
"Eleanor I need you in my office right now, there is something we need to address."
"Not now, Dear." " I am redecorating our love nest , I saw the most beautiful bedroom set today at Thomasville. Its from the Ernest Hemingway's collection." "I just had to have it." Eleanor said while measuring the room.
"Why!! Our bedroom set is not even a year old." said a dumbfound Ken.
"OHH it's passer. We needed a new one, trust me dear, I know these things."
Ken grabbed his wife by the wrist pulling her out of the bedroom. "What are you doing Ken?" Ask a shocked wife. "I am not finished, I think we also need new curtains and carpet to match it." "Don't you think?" she ask, while been pulled through the hallway to Ken's office.
Ken set up to put two chairs in front of his desk and sat his wife in one.
"Stay put" I need to get your daughter. "DO not move" he said exiting the room.
Ken found his daughter still in the living room " KIMBERLY!" he said . "In my study, NOW!!" said a exasperate Ken.
"But Dad, my show just started, can't it wait?" said Kim.
"NOWWWWWW!! KIM" said a very frustrates Ken, pointing his finger toward this office.
Kim decided to obey, she has never seen her father so forceful before.
Once both his girls was in his office, Ken closed the door and sat down at his desk.
Ken told them the bad news that it was no longer acceptable to spend so much money in his house. Eleanor seemed shock and Kim seemed annoyed at the news.
"Daddddd!!" whined Kim ."I just went to the car dealer today and I ordered my new car. You can't do that."
"Tough" said Ken. "You call them and cancel the delivery, he gave Kim the phone. Kim looked at her mom for comfort.
Eleanor got on her feet to complained and Ken brought her back to her seat with a look that told her she'd better sit back down.
Ken proceed to tell them what he'd found out at the finance adviser's office and something had to be done. Then he told them from now on they were to have no more needless spending.
"Eleanor!!" he said waking her up from her stupor. "You are going to sell all those wonderful paintings you've painted over the years and have stacked in the attic. Those are too beautiful to be hidden. I will open you a gallery in the South end Mall."
Eleanor almost fainted. "You don't mean that I have to..."
"Yes Eleanor, that is exactly what I mean. From now on you will have to work if you want money to spend on your outrageous expenses."
"As for you Kim, I found you a job, if your going to take a year off from college you will not stay in this house collecting dust.
Kim choked on her chewing gum "WHATTTTTTTT?????"
"You heard me, Kim." There is nice little Diner in town that needs a waitress.
"NOWWWWW WAIT JUST A MINUTE!!" shouted Eleanor. "I will not have MY daughter waitressing in some dirty Diner. If you want me too I WILL sell my paintings. but leave her alone! She is only a child."
"My decision is final, Eleanor. Kim is not a child she is 20."
"I will not do it" cried Kim.
"You will , Young Lady. If you want to stay under my roof. I've work to hard to have the kind of life you are living and I won't have the two of you blowing it all away. Is that clear?"
Eleanor couldn't believe what Ken was saying. This was a nightmare.
"You start Tomorrow Morning" . You better have a good night's sleep you have to be there at 7am and Sweetheart?" Ken said hugging his little girl. "Daddy is not sending you to a dirty Diner like Mom said, its a nice one." Ken kissed his baby girl on the forehead.
"But Ken, frankly you can't make your daughter work in a Diner."
"Yes Daddy I'll find another job, just not waitressing." Kim said stamping her foot.
"Be ready at 7 tomorrow that is all I am going to say on the subject."
"Fine!!" said Kim storming out of the room. "You will regret this and I won't like it." Ken had to smile at that. "Here, take this uniform, you'll have to wear it tomorrow." Kimberly stomped and ran to her room crying.
His little girl was having a lesson in growing up. Thought Ken.
Later Ken and Eleanor found themselves in their bedroom getting ready to retire for the night. Eleanor was sitting at her Vanity table brushing her long silky hair. "God she is beautiful" Ken thought watching her from the bed where he was lying reading a book." Come lie beside me, Baby" Ken said, tapping the bed beside him.
"No" Eleanor said putting the brush down none to gently. "You are being overbearing and you are being a Ass. I don't know what has gotten into you but I won't stand for it."
Ken got up from the bed and walked over to his wife. "I did what I had to do, you saw the figures. I love you and our daughter more than anything. You come first and you know it. Keeping you and Kim safe and secure is my job."
"You love us? YOU LOVE US?? Ken you are sending our daughter to work in... in a Diner Waitressing like.. like a .."
"Like a hard working girl?" Ken added.
"Aghhhhhhhh!!!" Eleanor threw a book at Ken.
"Calm down Eleanor, its not that bad. You are making a mountain out of a molehill. This afternoon after I left the Diner I went and paid a visit to the owner's parents. He is a decent hard working young man. I wouldn't send our daughter into the lion's den and you know that. Besides" Ken said drawing her to sit on his lap."She may find love."Ken winked.
Eleanor slapped his arm. "Don't you dare take this lightly. If something happens to her I will never forgive you! And I will not calm DOWN."
"In that case" Ken dared doing something he had thought of doing several times in their 25 years of marriage, but never did.
Before Eleanor realized what was happening, she was across her husband's knee." What are you doing?! Have you lost your mind? let me go this instant!" Eleanor screamed wiggling to get off.
"Not a chance Sweety" "You've had this coming for a very long time. I know your Dad spoiled you and I know I spoiled you and our Daughter. Money doesn't grow on trees. I know I've indulged you in the pass and let you waste a good part of our income but, its going to stop now! I LOVE YOU!! Eleanor." With that said, Ken brought his hand down on her pantied bottom with such a force it took Eleanor's breath away and he kept on going until he heard his wife crying and promising to be good forever.
Ken rocked his wife in his arm for a very long time afterwards. Then together they snuggled and talk about everything, and snuggle again, until Ellie fell asleep in her husband's arms.
In the last past weeks Ken's finances problems vanished. Eleanor seems happy planning the selling of her paintings, and Kim went to work every day. She even seem happy to do it. |
